Electric Blanket Testing
I am sure the electric blankets have been used a lot during this year’s cold winter! Electric blankets should be tested every year for safety. Bring them along to the WI Office in Keynsham on Monday 9th August for your blanket to be tested by a Trading Standard Officer free of charge.
Please phone to make an appointment. Bring as many blankets as you want, but each has to have an appointment time.Remember to bring all the appropriate wiring that belongs with the blankets. Enjoy a free cup of coffee/tea whilst you wait.

August Walk, Portishead
Sue Ferguson of Harbourside WI will be leading the August walk on Thursday 12th August 2010. Meet at 9.45 for 10.00 am, starting at “The Ship”, Down Road, Portishead. The pub, with a large car park, is accessed by going along the coast road from Portishead to Clevedon, is on the corner of Down Road and Hillside Road. This is a 5 mile walk, taking in the coastal path and Gordano Valley. (There are 2 steep ‘up hills’!). Lunch is available at the pub, but they only accept cash, NO DEBIT OR CREDIT CARDS. All walks count towards your WI Tri Challenge!

Croquet Taster Day, Nailsea or Knowle
Due to being oversubscribed hast year, we are holding our usual Croquet Taster Day at two venues on Tuesday 17th August, Nailsea Croquet Club, Nailsea, 1.30 pm to 4.30pm and South Bristol Croquet Club, Knowle, 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Visit to Woburn Abbey
You are able to visit three floors (NO LIFT AVAILABLE) where you can see stunning works of art, 18th century French and English furniture, silver and gold collections, a wide range of porcelain and many personal items. September Walk, Long Ashton
Jackie Dunn of Redhill WI will be leading this walk from Gatcombe Farm shop, Long Ashton. It will be on Wednesday 15th September, meeting at 10.15 for a 10.30 start. The walk will be about 3 to 3 ½ miles with an uphill start, then easy walking the rest of the way. Back to Gatcombe Farm shop, for lunch in their lovely restaurant. All walks count towards your WI Tri Challenge!

Butterflies of Avon and Somerset, Pensford.
A summer's garden would not be complete without the colour of butterflies. Come and hear Keith Gould and John Burrell talk about identifying and attracting butterflies into your garden. Friendhip Boxes and Christmas Tree Decorations, Almondsbury
A chance to have a go at two crafts in one day. To be held on Tuesday 21st September at the Scout Hut, Almondsbury from 10.00 am until 3.00 pm. The cost of the day will be £17.50 for members only. As usual tea, coffee and biscuits available on arrival and at lunchtime and with cake at tea time at a cost of £1.50 payable on the day. Closing 9th August.
St John's Church, South Parade, Bath, BA2 4AF, 10.30am to 3.30pm. Fiona Clarke is in demand as a singer, teacher, workshop leader and choral director. Her passion is to encourage even the most timid singers to find their voice in song in a fun and relaxed way. This workshop is ideal for beginners and accomplished singers alike. We are hoping to fill the church, so don't be shy as you will be amongst many friends. This day will help us find our singing voices in a fun and supportive environment.

Come along to hear her tell us of the remarkable life of Hildegard of Bingen. Living in the dangerous 12th Century, she was a musician, healer, artist, visionary, theologian, biographer, playwright and poet. Her writing on medicine is now valued by alternative practitioners and her music topped the charts on Classic FM – 850 years after it was written.

Drawing for the Terrified, Chewton Keynsham.
This is an introduction to drawing for those of us who say we cannot draw a straight line. This venue is very popular with or art groups and you will be working in a supportive atmosphere with an experienced tutor. Materials you will need to bring will be minimal - paper, 2B and 4B pencils and a rubber! 10.15 to 3.30pm at Chewton Mission Church, Chewton Keynsham, Nr Redlynch Park Farm, BS21 2SW. This is open to members only at £15.00 and the closing date is the 6th September. Please apply to WI House and enclose your cheque and sae.
Another chance to experience two different crafts in one day. Produce your own picture using Encaustic Painting and have a go at making silk paper. To be held at Cleeve Village Hall, the cost of the day will be £17.50 + approximately £9 for materials, payable on the day. Members only. Historical Lectures, Cleeve or Saltford
Garry Gowans this year is having a separate topic for each lecture session.
Week 1: Mycenae, City of Gold. The excavation of Mycenae was by Heinrich Schliemann in late 19th century and his finds (including amazing gold masks and jewellery) tell us about an amazing empire in Greece lasting from 1700-1100BC.
Week 2: Pompeii- the eruption of Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii and other cities. The talk relates what Pompeii was like before, after and during the eruption. It’s fascinating and full of human stories.
Week 3:Lepcis Magna- the great Roman City of North Africa, a microcosm of Rome with all it’s magnificence.
Week 4: Ancient Olympia and the Olympic Games- the story of how the Games started in 876BC and their development during the next 1200 years or so before they were stopped by Roman Emperor Constantine. He will also talk briefly about the resurrection of the Games in the modern era.
The lectures are held at Cleeve Village Hall on Tuesday26th October, 2nd, 9th and 16th November 1.45-3.15pm and at The Wansdyke Room, Saltford Hall, Saltford on Wednesday 27th October, 3rd, 10th and 17th of November7.30-9pm. What could you do about Climate Change, Portishead
Danny Chivers is an Environmental Biologist from Oxford, he will talk about the problems and involve the audience in walking their own personal carbon footprints and come up with simple actions to reduce them. Danny is a performance poet so will entertain us with some of his work. He is an independent speaker, not associated with any particular charity, campaign group or business. Come to an ‘island in the sun’ for an evening of traditional Caribbean storytelling and music. At the Conygre Hall, North Road, Timsbury, BA" 0JJ, from 10.30am until 3.30 pm. The day will start with a talk from Sarah Hopps on the 'Joys of being a Nursery Woman', giving tips on gardens, right plant, right place etc. A representative from John Lewis Home Design will also give a talk Interior Design.
In the afternoon we have Sally Taylor, Florist, doing Flower Arrangements and giving tips on their preparation and care. Members Only, Tickets £12. Closing date Monday 11th October 2010.
