Blanket Testing


We are again offering an electric blanket testing service. The blankets are tested by Trading Standards Officers and given a certificate to show they have been checked. Testing will take place on Monday 11th August at WI House, Keynsham. Please phone the office to make an appointment. BE SAFE NOT SORRY!

Walk, Ashton Court


A walk in Ashton Court, arranged by Whitchurch Evening WI of 4.5miles or 5miles for those who choose to cross the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Enter the estate at the Mansion car park, Bower Ashton – A369 Clanage, by the Art College. Meet there 10.15 for 10.30 start. The walk, which has no stiles, takes you beside the old deer park and golf course and there are beautiful views of the city. Refreshments are available at the Stable Café in the courtyard of the Mansion.

National Botanic Gardens of Wales


These Gardens are set within a beautiful 568 acre parkland and secluded woodlands are home to a unique collection of over 10,000 different plants. A 220 metre herbaceous border forms the spine of the garden, and takes the visitor past the double walled garden, through deep flower borders, fountains, and pools along a geological time walk. Bring a picnic or dine in the licensed restaurant. Open to members, family and friends. Tickets – members: Adult £21.25 – Senior Citizen £19.25 – Non Members Adult £22.25 – Senior Citizen £20.25 Your WI Secretary has an application form with the various pick-up points and times. Press, Promotion, Publicity. Weston, Bath


This will be your chance to find out how to use the press to your advantage. Please start collecting your press reports and the published version to compare it with. Pick up tips on using your posters and programmes to promote your WI. To be held at Weston Parish Hall, High Street, Weston, Bath BA1 4BE on Tuesday 2nd September from 7.30 – 9.30. Wednesday 10th and Monday 15th September 2008
Langford Veterinary Centre


A visit to the Langford Veterinary Centre in Langford has been arranged on Wednesday 10th and Monday 15th September at 10.30am. The conducted tour of approximately 2 hours will show the facilities at the college. The cost is £6.50 members and £7.50 non-members and will include a coffee/tea at the end of the tour. Walk, Frenchay


Frenchay WI will lead this walk of approximately 4 miles along the River Frome towards Hambrook and Winterbourne stopping at the Golden Hart, Kendelshire where lunch is available. After lunch the walk will take the return route to Frenchay. Meet 10.15 for 10.30 for start outside the Friends Meeting House. DO NOT park in the village hall car park, use roadside parking by the Meeting House.

AGM, Weston-Super-Mare


This year there is a member of the Red Cross explaining their work in disaster areas and our Guest Speaker is Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, a member of the House of Lords. Book your seat to spend the day with us, walk along the prom or a visit to the shops at lunchtime. Tickets for visitors £8.50. Closing date 18th August, your secretary has an application form.

Malvern Autumn Flower Show


The perfect end to the gardening year – a coach trip to the Malvern Autumn Flower Show. You will be able to see a mix of autumn flowers, produce, livestock and family entertainment. A Cookery theatre with celebrity chefs, speciality food and wine. Lots of crafts, a perfect spot for early Christmas shopping. Tickets to include coach and entry to the show Members £27 Friends £28. Water and Water Aid, Keynsham


Come and hear Katie Williams from Wessex Water talk about ‘clean fresh water’. She will explain about the treatment of water both clean and dirty and all the services that are provided. She will also talk about the company’s charity: Water Aid in Africa. Monday 29th September 7.30pm at The Fear Institute Keynsham. Cost is £5.50 members, £ 6.50 non-members that include tea/coffee. History Lectures 'The Romans', Clever and Saltford


This year we have a new lecturer, Gary Gowans, a lively and very interesting speaker. The Romans invaded Britain in AD43 and stayed for nearly 400 years. Over the course of the four lectures, Gary will bring to life the impact Roman civilisation had on Britain and its people from the time of the invasion until the Roman legions finally left these shores in AD410. Lecture 1: The coming of the Romans: Lecture 2: Building Roman Britain: Lecture 3: Everyday life in Roman Britain and Lecture 4: The Golden Age of Roman Britain.
The cost of £16.50 for members and £18.50 for non-members includes lecture notes. The lectures are at Cleeve Village Hall, Tuesday 28th October, 4th, 11th and 18th November at 1.45 – 3.15p.m and Wansdyke Room, Saltford Hall on Wednesday 29th October and 5th, 12th and 19th November at 7.30 – 9.00 p.m. An Application form is with your secretary, closing date 15th September.

Houses of Parliament Trip


Another trip has been planned to visit the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday 7th October. There will be a tour on arrival of both the House of Commons and Lords. Some members will be able to see the Houses in action after lunch. The cost for members is £15 and non-members £17 WI secretaries have an Application Form. Closing date Monday 1st September

The Shakespeare Ladies Club, Portishead


Alison Neil returns to the Somerset Hall to regale us with tales of Georgian London. Set amid the fascinating trivia of the mid-18th century, Mary Cowper De Grey recounts the true story of a group of ‘Ladies of Quality’ who are determined to make Shakespeare fashionable.

Our November walk is 10.15 for a 10.30 start from the Lamb Inn at Iron Acton. The walk will be approximaely 4 miles around Iron Acton Rangeworthy and Latteridge, followed by Lunch at the Lamb.

Home Economics Ralley, Portishead


Local food for local people, cut food Miles. Steve Morris will tell of the exciting first 10 years of Bristol Farmers Market. Les Davies relates the history of Somerset Cider Industry followed by John Thatcher from Thatchers Cider who will tell us about the recent development of the Cider Industry ad before lunch there will be tastings. The afternoon speaker is Jane Brocket author of 'The Gentle Art of Domesticity' a lively Creative look at domesticity today!! Competition is for a Somerset Apple Cake, your secretary has the recipe. Members only, tickets £10. Coffee morning and Lunchtime raffle. Closing date 29th September.

Day Out at the Races, Chepstow.


Following the popular day at the races we had 3 years ago we are again offering a day at the races, Chepstow this time, a chance to see them jump the fences. This will be on Wednesday 26th November, at a cost of £60; this includes a marquee, entrance to the premier enclosure, a complimentary race card, and a three-course lunch. Why not get a car load of friends or organise a minibus to get you there. To guarantee your we need a deposit of £5 either bring it to the Sport and Leisure table at the EGM on 26th March, or send to W.I. house by Monday 28th April. Final balances would be due on 26th July.

Federation Carol Service, Bath Abbey.


Visit the Christmas market, have lunch and enjoy your prelude to Christms, singing carols and listening to readings in the beautiful Bath Abbey at 2.30 pm. Family and Friends £2.50. Closing Date Monday 20th October.

Scheduled flight to Austria (airport to be confirmed at end of 2009) where we are transferred by our executive coach to a 3* hotel in Kirchberg for a 5 night stay on half board basis. On day 6 we travel to Oberammergau where we stay in Category 3 accommodation in various inns/guest houses in and around Oberammergau.
The tour includes: Oberammergau Passion Play tickets & package, Rattenberg & Tratzberg Castle, Kitzbuhel & Salzburg. Optional: Tyrolean evening, Achensee train ride & boat cruise, guided tour of Salzburg
