In the Pink - Walton St Mary’s Hall, Clevedon


This is intended to be a lighthearted event with a relaxed feel good factor, where you are invited to share your favourite poetry and prose. Your contribution may be your own work or a favourite piece by another person. You may read your chosen piece yourself, or if you prefer it may be read out by someone else. This event will be the launch pad for the planned anthology of poems as advertised in the February newsletter. The cost is £6.00 for members and £7.00 for family and friends. This includes soft drinks and nibbles. Your secretary has an application form, closing date is the 20th April.

Beginners Flower Arrangement Day, Falfield


If you would like to learn how to arrange those bunches of flowers you receive then come along and enjoy learning how at Falfield Village Hall. The cost for the day £16 plus £2 for materials. You will need to bring a choice of flowers. As usual the day starts at 10.00 and finishes at 3.30 Tea / coffee biscuits on arrival from 9.30am, tea/coffee at lunchtime tea/coffee and cake in the afternoon. The cost for this is £1.50 payable on the day. You will require a packed lunch. Closing Date 11th May 2009

Led by Pucklechurch WI on Thursday July 2nd, 10.15 for a 10.30 start, from Pucklechurch Community Centre this walk will be about 4 miles. Cost £1 to be paid on the day.

Executive Members & WI Advisers will be ‘Out & About’ on July 6th and 7th at Redhill, Farmborough and Wick. Come along to meet us, have a meal & meet each other. Pick up tips on making the most of your WI, PLUS expanding your programme. If you have any suggestions for the Agenda on these days please send them to WI House.

Pastels Day, Chewton Keynsham


10.00am – 3.00pm. Join experienced tutor Mike Hoskins for a day school of landscape drawing in pastels. Bring your own materials, paper, pastels and a packed lunch to Chewton Mission Church, Chewton Keynsham near Redlynch Park Farm BS21 2SW. Coffee & tea available. Members only, £15. WI Sports Day - Chew Magna


To be held at Moorledge Farm, Moorledge Lane, Chew Magna BS40 8TL 10.30 am to 3.30 pm - Gates open at 9.30 am.

Five High Schools will be created from the members participating; each school will have a member of the sport and leisure committee as its head teacher. Each school will be invited to enter all sorts of games, like sack race, egg and spoon race; there will be games at all levels of ability from very easy to not much harder! Older girls who do not want to participate can come and watch and cheer on their school, there will be trophies and medals for the winners.

We will have a wonderful sports field to use weather permitting if not, there are PRISTINE BARNS available. We have arranged conveniences for you. Bring your picnic lunch, chairs, tables, gazebos, tents! There is ample parking. We could all dress up in our old school uniforms, if they still fit! If not track suits, shorts, daps, trainers, anything comfy so you can enjoy the day.

Competition for an old school photo, there will be a prize for the best.

So come along and have some fun and laughter, even if you have no one to join in the games come and watch the others, sit in the sun (hopefully) enjoy a lovely cream tea with fresh strawberries from the farm opposite (included in the admission price). Relive your old school sports days! Closing date Monday 15th June. Admission: Members £6 and Friends £7 (Sorry no dogs) to include cream tea.

Cake Jewellery.


A new concept on Sugar Craft.- Tuesday 28th July 2009 in St Georges Church Hall, Easton in Gordano.

This new form of Cake Decoration using Beads is good for those special occasions ie Weddings, Anniversaries or special Birthdays.

Cost £16 plus there will be a charge of £2.50 for a Kit payable on the day. Tea/coffee served on arrival, lunchtime and afternoon cost £1.50 payable on the day. Packed lunch required. Closing Date 15th June 2009

This will be held on Friday 7th August,10.15 for a 10.30 start. Meet at the Anchor Pub, Oldbury on Severn and walk along the River Severn led by Falfield WI.

Electric Blanket Testing


Just as the evenings are getting lighter and the weather is getting warmer I talk about electric blankets! I am sure that with the cold weather we have had this winter a lot of the blankets have been in use. Remember all electric blankets should be tested annually for your own safety. This year I have again asked our friends from ‘Trading Standards’ to come along with their testing kit.

If you wish to have your blanket tested phone the WI office at Keynsham (0117 9864782) to make an appointment. Be safe in bed next winter.

Outing to Althorp


Visit the delightful Spencer family home in Northamptonshire, where we will be able to see many magnificent rooms – including some of the private apartments – housing one of Europe’s finest private collections of furniture, pictures and ceramics. Also included are two exhibitions and extensive grounds with a separate picnic area. Please wear sensible footwear as there are some areas with uneven footing.

Leaving for home at 4.30 p.m. Open to family and friends. Members £25.50, non members £26.50 Your WI Secretary has an application form with pick-up places and times. Closing date Monday 6th July 2009

A Mozart Evening - Timsbury.


Peter Clarke’s musical lectures are renowned within the federation and nationally at Denman College. He returns to share his knowledge of Mozart – his life and his music, in a lecture illustrated with excerpts from Mozart’s works. We promise you a musical evening of particular delight.
Open to members Tickets £8.00 and non members Tickets £9.00. 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm, drink and nibbles are included. Your secretary has an application form and the closing date is the 17th July 2009.

Avon Federation Annual General Meeting - Weston-Super-Mare



We hope another informative and interesting day at Winter Gardens Pavilion, Weston-super-Mare. The morning agenda includes Valerie Wood-Gaiger W-Icon and author of ‘Grandma’s Guide to Great Days Out’ and a resolution put forward by Timsbury WI

This meeting urges HM government to require the Medicine and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to adopt the same safety regulations for children’s medicines as are applied by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) with regards to additives in children’s food.

In the afternoon our guest speaker is Bob Flowerdew gardening expert and member of the Gardener’s World Team with his talk ‘No Work Gardening’

Safety at Sea - Easton in Gordano.


Come and hear retired ship’s pilot Robin Wall talk about his interesting working life safely guiding large ships into the docks. After coffee listen to Coxswain David Herbert explain about the work of the Portishead lifeboat, which is privately run as a charity. On Wednesday 30th September at St Georges Hall, Easton in Gordano.

Cost: Members £6 and non-members £7 to include coffee. Application form is with your secretary and the closing date is August 18th.

Another evening is planned for you to listen to prospective speakers for the Year Book on Monday 12th October 2009 at the Carter Suite (upstairs) Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, Broad Street BS37 6AD. Parchment Day School - Keynsham


Did you see the lovely examples of this craft at the EGM? Would you like to make one? Well here is your chance. A Parhment Day School is to be held at WI House on Thursday 22nd October. As usual the day starts at 10am and finishes at 3.30 pm. Tea/coffee biscuits available on arrival, tea/coffee at lunchtime and tea/coffee and cake in the afternoon. The cost of refreshments is £1.50 payable on the day. You will require a packed lunch. The cost of the day is £16 which includes materials! The closing date of 7th September.

Once again three very talented gentlemen will entertain us with an evening of light-hearted verse, prose, songs and piano music all presented with wit and good humour. There could be a seasonal theme to the programme, also to the light refreshments included in the ticket price. History Lectures, Roman Britain Part II Cleeve and Saltford


Garry Gowans will be continuing his talks on Roman Britain with the following subjects:

  • The Women of Roman Britain, their lives, fashions and accessories.

  • Tombstones provide us with the names of 154 women from Roman Britain and many have fascinating stories to tell, none more so than Regina married to a Syrian businessman.
  • The Vindolanda Tablets, Britain’s earliest writing

  • The remarkable Vindolanda Tablets add to this fund of knowledge, particularly the wife of the Commanding Officer at the Vindolanda Fort on Hadrian’s Wall-Sulpicia Lepidina.
  • By Land, River and Sea: Travel and Transport in Roman Britain

  • The importance of roads within the Roman Empire cannot be underestimated and Britain had its own ‘motorway’ system nearly 2000years ago.
  • Heavens Above: The gods and goddesses of Roman Britain<\li>
    With over 400 known gods and goddesses, Rome’s tolerance towards religion of conquered peoples was quite amazing. Indeed they fused local gods with their own.

    The lectures are held at Cleeve Village Hall on Tuesday 27th Oct, 3rd, 10th and 17th November 1.45-3.15pm and at The Wansdyke Room Saltford Hall, Salford on Wednesday 28th Oct, 4th, 11th and 18th November 7.30-9pm. Cost-member£17 and non-member£19 Closing date is 14th September

    We board our Executive coach at one of the above pick up points and travel to Dover for our Channel crossing to Calais. We continue to Ostend and check in at the centrally located 3* Ramada Hotel where we stay for 3 nights.     Scheduled flight to Austria (airport to be confirmed at end of 2009) where we are transferred by our executive coach to a 3* hotel in Kirchberg for a 5 night stay on half board basis. On day 6 we travel to Oberammergau where we stay in Category 3 accommodation in various inns/guest houses in and around Oberammergau.
